Monitoring seismic activity in Central America yesterday, Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, reflected moderate events and low instrumental seismicity concentrated in the Pacific Fire Belt and local geological faults in the region.
The following are the confirmed earthquakes with magnitude greater than 2.0 by the scientific and technical agencies of each country:
🇵🇦 Panama (Institute of Geosciences - UP)
The seismicity in Panama focused on the reactivation of faults in the west of the country:
Earthquake in Progreso (ChiriquÃ) - Mag. 3.3: It happened in the early morning at 12:45 a.m. local time (05:45 UTC). Its epicenter was located 12 km southeast of Progreso, with a depth of 16 km. It was identified as one of the main replicas of the sequence initiated at the border.
Earthquake in Boquete / Caldera - Mag. 2.8: Registered at 5:24 a.m. local time (10:24 UTC), located 11 km south of Alto Boquete, with a depth of 17 km.
Earthquake on the Northern Border (Bocas del Toro) - Mag. 2.8: It happened in the afternoon, at 1:46 p.m. local time (18:46 UTC), with epicenter located 35 km south of Changuinola and a depth of 17 km.
🇬🇹 Guatemala (INSIVUMEH)
The interaction of the Mesoamerican Trench off the Pacific coast maintained the constant release of energy:
Earthquake off the coast of Retalhuleu - Mag. 4.2: The strongest event in the country occurred at 4:21 p.m. local time (22:21 UTC). The epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, off Retalhuleu, with a depth of 69 km.
Minor instrumental earthquakes (Border with Mexico) - Mag. 4.1 to 4.4: Border monitoring stations in San Marcos captured adjacent activity from Ciudad Hidalgo (Chiapas) with perceptible magnitudes in Guatemalan territory of up to 4.4 during the afternoon.
🇸🇻 El Salvador (MARN) and 🇳🇮 Nicaragua (INETER)
Earthquake off the coast of Nicaragua - Mag. 3.6: It was recorded in the afternoon in the Department of Carazo, locating the epicenter in the Pacific Ocean about 34 km south of Managua.
Activity in El Salvador: The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) reported instrumental seismicity in the background on the Pacific coast (smaller earthquakes between Mag. 2.4 and 3.1), classified as non-sensitive to the civilian population.
🇨🇷 Costa Rica (OVSICORI-UNA)
Earthquake in Puntarenas - Mag. 3.4: It happened in the afternoon and was located 29 km north of Puntarenas, with a surface spotlight.
Micro-heartwork in Heredia - Mag. 2.0: Automatically registered in the limits of the province of San José with Heredia.
Note: Civil Protection agencies in the region (such as SINAPROC and CONRED) confirmed that no structural damage or human loss resulting from these road or telluric events was reported during the last 24 hours.
