Monitoring of telluric activity in Central America during yesterday, Wednesday, September 2, 2026, reflected an extremely active day in the Pacific Fire Belt, highlighting a strong sensitive border event in Guatemala and an unusually shallow earthquake beneath the Salvadoran capital.
The following is the list of the most important earthquakes confirmed by the seismological networks of the region:
🇬🇹 Guatemala (INSIVUMEH)
The interaction of the Cocos and Caribbean plates generated the strongest perceived movement in the north of the region:

Earthquake on the Pacific Coast – Magnitude 5.2: It happened in the morning, at 12:28 UTC (06:28 a.m. local time). Its epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, very close to the maritime border with Chiapas (Mexico), presenting a depth of 10 km. He was perceived strongly in the departments of San Marcos, Quetzaltenango and Retalhuleu.
Minor Opening earthquake – Magnitude 4.3: Recorded in the early morning at 06:06 UTC (00:06 a.m. local time) in the same region of the Pacific Ocean off the west coast.

🇸🇻 El Salvador (MARN)
The Environmental Observatory reported an atypical local event that ignited alerts for its extreme urban proximity:

Earthquake in San Salvador Downtown – Magnitude 3.3: It was registered at 23:50 UTC (05:50 p.m. local time). The criticism of this earthquake was its origin: a very shallow depth of only 7.4 kilometers with earth epicenter just 3 km west of the city of San Salvador (near Mexicans and Old Cuscatlan). It was triggered by local geological faults and felt like a strong, fast "shock" throughout the capital.

🇵🇦 Panama (Institute of Geosciences - UP)
The national network kept the record within a sequence that added more than 34 moves in the last three days:

Earthquake Northeast of Coiba – Magnitude 4.1: Registered at 23:26 UTC (06:26 p.m. local time). The epicenter was located in the waters of the Pacific Ocean, about 30 km from the Island of Coiba, with a depth of 10 km.
Earthquake in the Border Region – Magnitude 3.1: It occurred at 17:20 UTC (12:20 p.m. local time), located 3 km west of Plaza de Caisán, in the province of Chiriquí, with a depth of 28 km.

🇨🇷 Costa Rica (OVSICORI-UNA)

Earthquake in Quepos (Puntarenas) – Magnitude 4.0: Captured by automatic stations at 23:29 UTC (05:29 p.m. local time). It had its epicenter on the central Pacific coast in the Quepos area, at a depth of 24 km.

🦺 Report of Damage
Despite the high perception of the earthquake of 5.2 in Guatemala and the widespread scare of the superficial earthquake of 3.3 in the capital of El Salvador, the relief authorities (CONRED, Civil Protection and SINAPROC) confirmed that no casualties, injuries or material damage of consideration were recorded in any of the infrastructures in the region.
