The most relevant earthquakes registered in the Central American region yesterday, Thursday, September 3, 2026, expressed in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), are the following:
📋 Main Earthquakes in Central America (September 3)
El Salvador: Quake of magnitude 3.6 at 17:48:45 UTC. The epicenter was calculated in waters of the Pacific Ocean, approximately 50 km south of Acajutla, with a depth of 22 km.
Costa Rica: Earthquake of magnitude 3.4 at 01:17:36 UTC on September 4 (recorded locally from 7:17 p.m. to Thursday, September 3). Located 7 km southwest of Jacó, at a very shallow depth of 6 km.
Nicaragua: Quake of magnitude 2.7 at 16:23:06 UTC. Epicenter located in the Pacific Ocean about 68 km southwest of Punta Cosigüina, maintaining a depth of 26 km.
Honduras: Quake of magnitude 2.8 at 12:24:39 UTC. The focus was on the Gulf of Fonseca region, about 10 km southwest of Amapala, with a depth of just 3 km.
Panama (Border Zone): Smaller earthquake of magnitude 2.3 at 11:20:00 UTC (6:20 a.m. local time). The instrumental epicenter was located about 16 km northwest of Paso Canoas, with a depth of 38 km.
🌐 Important Peripheral Activity in Borders
Due to the high interaction of the Cocos and Caribbean plates, sensitive adjoining events were recorded in the isthmus:
Guatemala - Mexico border: Earthquake of magnitude 3.6 at 22:34:45 UTC. Located 32 km north of Tapachula, with a depth of 146 km. (The Seismological Service of Mexico captured a larger earthquake of magnitude 4.0 in Huixtla, Chiapas, adjacent to this same area at 22:34 UTC.)
The civil protection sectors (such as SINAPROC, CONRED and the CNE of Costa Rica) confirmed that no material or civil damage was recorded arising from this regular tectonic activity.
