The most relevant earthquakes registered in the Central American region yesterday, Saturday, September 5, 2026, strictly expressed in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) to standardize geographical readings, are the following:
📋 Main Earthquakes in Central America (September 5)
Offshore Central America: Earthquake of magnitude 5.0 at 05:00:06 UTC. The epicenter was calculated in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 10 km, being located in the regional convergence marine basin. A few minutes later, in this same area of the South Pacific, a moderate replica of magnitude 4.4 was detected at 05:16:00 UTC. Due to their distance from the continental coasts, both events were not reported sensitive by the civilian population.
Costa Rica / Western Border: Earthquake of magnitude 4.0 at 09:34:00 UTC (03:34 a.m. local time). The Observatory and the National Seismic Network located the epicenter in the Pacific about 114 kilometers west of Punta Burica, with a surface focus. Additionally, stations in the border area recorded a minor event of magnitude 3.5 at 05:01:10 UTC, located 82 km west-southwest of Puerto Armuelles.
Panama (Central Region): Earthquake of magnitude 3.8 at 20:55:32 UTC (03:55 p.m. local time). The Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama (IGC-UP) located the Earthâ€Ös epicenter on the mainland, approximately 40 kilometers south of the town of Soná, in the province of Veraguas, with a depth of 10 km.
Guatemala: The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) reported background tectonic activity on the Pacific coast. The most relevant instrumental movement of the day occurred in the hours of the night, specifically at 02:56:41 UTC on September 6 (20:56:41 local time on Saturday 5), being located in the Pacific Ocean.
🦺 Infrastructure and Alerts Balance
The different Civil Protection agencies of the isthmus (such as SINAPROC, the CNE of Costa Rica, CONRED and Civil Protection of El Salvador) confirmed that, after the analysis of the intensities and locations of yesterdayâ€Ös earthquakes, no affected people were reported, injured or material damage to the infrastructures of the region.
