JOTA-JOTI 2026: Get Your Club Involved and Put Amateur Radio in Young Hands

Date : 03 / 09 / 2026
Author : WIA, SGARS, Scouts & Guides

One of amateur radioâ€Ös biggest opportunities to introduce young people to radio returns from
16 to 18 October 2026, when Scouts and Guides around the world take part in Jamboree on the Air
and Jamboree on the Internet, JOTA-JOTI.
World Scouting describes JOTA-JOTI as the worldâ€Ös largest digital and radio Scout event,
bringing together more than two million young people from over 170 countries each year.
Through amateur radio and online activities, young people can meet their counterparts around
the world while developing communications, technology, teamwork and cross-cultural skills.
The 2026 program includes amateur and broadcast radio activities, global connections, challenges,
moderated online chat, group video calls and other activities designed to promote friendship
and global citizenship.

SGARS and VK2LE return to the Endeavour Boree Regatta

Here in Australia, the St George Amateur Radio Society is again getting behind JOTA in a substantial way.
SGARS has supported JOTA at Sydneyâ€Ös Endeavour Boree Regatta since 1995, and in 2026 its club station
VK2LE will operate from Bonna Point Reserve, Kurnell, across HF, VHF and UHF.
Hundreds of Scouts and Guides are expected at the event, where young participants will be able to make
supervised amateur radio contacts and try activities including the ever-popular radio fox hunt.
SGARS is also calling for amateur operators and clubs elsewhere in Australia who will be active during
JOTA to make themselves known, so contacts can be arranged between VK2LE and other participating Scout
and Guide stations.

A call to Australian amateur radio clubs

This is where Australian amateur radio clubs can make a real difference.
JOTA-JOTI is not merely another weekend to add to the contest calendar.
It puts radios, antennas and experienced operators directly in front of young people already interested
in adventure, technology, communications and learning practical skills.
Now is the time for clubs to contact their local Scout or Guide group and offer to help them participate
in JOTA-JOTI 2026. Set up an HF station, demonstrate VHF and UHF, organise a fox hunt, show them
satellites or digital modes, or arrange contacts with groups such as SGARS and VK2LE.
Give young people the microphone and let them discover that a radio can connect them with someone on
the other side of Australia or the world.
Clubs spend plenty of time wondering where the next generation of radio amateurs will come from.
On 16–18 October, some of them may be standing at the local Scout Hall waiting for someone to show them.
