What's New in the Foundation Licence Manual 5th Edition?
Date : 12 / 09 / 2026
Author : WIA & Phil Wait VK2ASD
The release of the Wireless Institute of Australia Foundation Licence Manual, 5th Edition marks
the most significant update to the manual in recent years.
While the familiar structure remains, the new edition has undergone a comprehensive review with
numerous updates, rewrites and additions throughout.
The result is a modern learning resource that not only prepares candidates for the Foundation Licence
examination but also provides a broader introduction to radio and communications technology.
The new edition is available through the WIA's print-on-demand service and can be ordered directly online.
One of the most important changes is the extensive update of the regulations section,
reflecting the introduction of the Australian Amateur Radio Class Licence and other recent
regulatory changes.
Information relating to callsigns has also been revised, while the section covering the WIA Band Plan
has been updated to reflect current operating practices and spectrum usage.
For anyone entering amateur radio today, these changes ensure the manual aligns with the current
operating environment rather than historical arrangements that no longer apply.
The 5th Edition also introduces a brand-new appendix titled "Real World Passive Components".
This practical guide helps readers understand how to select the right components for RF projects
and introduces concepts often overlooked in beginner texts, including Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR),
dielectric loss, self-resonant frequency, component noise and safety considerations.
These topics bridge the gap between theory and practical construction, helping newcomers understand
why components that appear identical on paper can perform very differently in radio applications.
Another new feature is a section titled "The Rise and Rise of AI", which explores the growing role
of artificial intelligence and, importantly, how readers can assess the reliability of information
by understanding the difference between primary and secondary information sources.
In a world where information is abundant but accuracy varies considerably, this addition provides an
important skill for both amateur radio operators and the wider community.
As previous editions gradually expanded beyond examination preparation into a broader introduction
to radio, the 5th Edition continues that evolution, making it a valuable resource for anyone
interested in radio communications.
