New Governance Training Initiative for WIA Affiliated Clubs
Date : 06 / 09 / 2026
Author : WIA & Angelo Giuffre VK2NWT
The Wireless Institute of Australia is launching another new initiative to support its Affiliated Clubs,
with professional training and guidance in club governance to be provided at no cost to participating clubs.
The initiative was announced this week in a letter from WIA President Scott Williams VK3KJ to Affiliated
Club Presidents and Secretaries and will also feature in this Sundayâ€Ös WIA National News Broadcast.
The program recognises that amateur radio clubs depend heavily on volunteers who often find themselves
taking on committee positions carrying governance, financial and legal responsibilities.
Helping those volunteers understand their roles is an important part of strengthening clubs and amateur
radio nationally.
The training will be delivered by Associations Forum, an organisation specialising in practical governance
education for associations, charities, clubs and other not-for-profit organisations.
The program will comprise three webinar sessions delivered through Microsoft Teams.
The first course will examine the roles and responsibilities of governing committee members,
helping Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers and other committee members better understand and carry out
their responsibilities.
This will be delivered as two 90-minute sessions.
A further one-hour webinar will specifically assist WIA Affiliated Clubs that are currently unincorporated
and may be considering incorporation, explaining the options available to them.
Registration invitations will be distributed to Affiliated Clubs shortly.
Whether someone is joining a committee for the first time or has spent years keeping a club functioning
through the mysterious combination of constitutions, minutes, AGMs and heroic quantities of unpaid labour,
the training provides an opportunity to learn from professional governance specialists.
All Affiliated Club committee members are encouraged to take advantage of the program.
Club Presidents or Secretaries who did not receive the Presidentâ€Ös email should contact WIA Affiliated
Clubs Coordinator Angelo Giuffre VK2NWT at clubs@nationaloffice.wia.org.au.
