Harry Angel Memorial 80 Metre Sprint Celebrates Another Strong Year
Date : 11 / 06 / 2026
Author : Dr. Kevin Johnston VK4UH, Glenn Mathison VK4GMI
The Harry Angel Memorial 80 Metre Sprint once again brought amateur radio operators together from across Australia and New Zealand, with 36 logs submitted in the 2026 event. First established in 1999, the annual sprint honours the memory of Harry Angel VK4HA, who at the time of becoming a Silent Key at the remarkable age of 106, was Australia's oldest licensed amateur radio operator. Contest managers Kevin VK4UH and Glenn VK4GMI were pleased to report that participation remained consistent with recent years despite the event coinciding with the Wireless Institute of Australia AGM and Conference in Albury, along with several major sporting events held on the same weekend.
Competition was strong across the three contest categories. In the Phone Section, VK4EK claimed first place with 47 points, followed by the VK3BEZ team in second place and VK2FO in third. The CW Section saw VK2IG take top honours with 36 points, ahead of VK3HY in second place and VK5GG in third. The Mixed Section was won by VK4M, operated by VK4SN, with an impressive 71 points, securing back-to-back victories. The VK4IZ team placed second, while VK2EZF finished third. Certificate awards were presented to the top three entrants in each section, with winners also eligible to claim points towards the WIA Peter Brown Contest Champion Trophy.
Having now been conducted annually for 27 years on the first Saturday in May, the Harry Angel Memorial Sprint remains a popular fixture on the Australian contest calendar. Contest organisers have indicated they will investigate the possibility of moving future events to an alternative weekend to avoid ongoing clashes with the WIA AGM. On behalf of the Redcliffe and District Radio Club and the WIA, contest managers Kevin VK4UH and Glenn VK4GMI thanked all participants for their support and congratulated the 2026 placegetters. Full results and score breakdowns are available through the WIA Contest website.
